LEO CLUB OF SMK SUNGAI MAONG FISCAL YEAR 2012-2013 E-BULLETIN FIRST ISSUE (PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES JUNE - SEPTEMBER 2012)

Pasar Ria Sales ( 07.07.2012)

In conjunction to our school’s Hari Permuafakatan which was on the 7th of July 2012, a Pasar Ria sale was held. Leo Club of SMK Sungai Maong participated in this activity and set up one food stall. The main objective of this project is to raise funds for our club and the profit gained is going to be used to carry out future projects.

One week before the sale, which is on the 30th of June, a Leo B.O.D meeting was held. We discussed about items that are going to be sold during the Pasar Ria sales. Leos were every initiative and supportive for the preparation of the project. Some of the Leos even contributed food and drinks for the Pasar Ria sales. On the day itself, we arrived at school around 6.15a.m. A total of 8 Leos were present to help out in the sales that lasted the whole morning. Leos were very creative and helped to promote the cheesecakes, chocolate cookies, french fries, mash potato, ribena sprite, and ice sticks in baskets, trying to sell as must as possible. The sale ended at 12.00 noon.

All the committee helped in the cleaning up of the place before leaving. Almost all the food and drinks were sold out. Leos were very helpful and co-operative before, during and after the sale. We managed raised a total fund of RM446.70.

Here, we would like to thank all the committees for their hard work in making this project a success. Not to forget all of the supportive parents of Leos who contributed directly and indirectly in our sale. We would also like to thank our faculty advisor, Madam Jong for sponsoring the delicious cheese cupcakes and Miss Maria for her endless support. Lastly we would like to thank all the Leos who supported in the sale. Although it was tiring, but the time spent together and the memories it made could hardly been replaced. Everyone has done a magnificent job and this project was a great success.

Region 1 Leo Clubs Joint Installation ( 05.08.2012 )

Region 1 Leo Clubs Joint Installation was held on the 5th of August 2012(Sunday). The organizing chairperson for this event was Leo Melvis Lai from SMK Sungai Tapang. The venue was Mandarin Restaurant and the dress code was semi-formal with our Leo vest. Approximately 350 Leos from 15 Leo clubs attended this function. A total of 36 Leos from our club including our faculty advisors, Madam Maggie Jong and Miss Maria Liew participated in this joyous event.

Our club was in charge of ticket designing. A few Leos were very helpful and creative in helping to design the tickets. Here, I would like to thank Zone2 Chairperson Lion Sheila Kho for sponsoring us to print out the tickets for this event. Besides, each club was asked to sponsor a lucky draw gift. Our club decided to sponsor a Lion soft toy with a Leo vest sewn onto it to symbolize the Leo spirit in all of us and the pride of being a Leo. There were a lot of performances during the event and Leos from our club also volunteered to show their talents. There were three performances from our school. One of which was a duet performed by Leo Michael Allen and Leo Tina Bong, a dance performed by our ‘King of Dance’, Leo Ryan Kong and one of our most talented singer, Leo Brian Chong accompanied by guitarist, Leo Eugene Lau. All of the performers practiced hard and did a great job on that day. We are all really proud of them.

The event started at 12.00 p.m. and ended at 3.30 p.m.

We learnt a lot through this event because a lot of teamwork is needed from all the Leo clubs from each school to make this event a great success. Every club worked hard and all of us had a great time together. Here, I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the Leo members who helped directly and indirectly in this event. Without them, we would be unable to complete the tasks given and ensure the smooth flow of the event. I would also like to thank our faculty advisors, Madam Jong and Miss Maria for sacrificing their time to share this special occasion with us. Not forgetting our Zone 1 chairperson, Lion Derbe, Zone 2 chairperson, Lion Sheila Kho and Lion Caroline Sim for helping and guiding us throughout the whole process of the event. Last but not least, I would like to congratulate our organizing chairperson, Leo Melvis Lai for leading us and doing a job well done to make this event a success. All of us had a really memorable time and the Leo spirit in us had grown stronger.

'Bak Chang' Sale at Salvation Army Boys' Home

( 31.08.2012 )

On the 31st of August (Friday), a charity sale was held at Salvation Army Boys’ Home. The objective was to raise funds for the Salvation Army. Our club and our sister club, Leo Club of SMK St. Joseph, had helped our Host Club, Lion Clubs of Kuching Host at their stall. A total of 4 Leos from our club went to help out in this project.

Before the sale, Lion Francis Ang brought us all for breakfast. The sale started at 8 a.m. Our stall sold non-halal Bak Changs. After putting the Bak Changs into plastic bags, Leos helped to promote the Bak Changs and did their best to sell everything.  All the items were sold out at 10.00 a.m.  The ‘Bak Chang’ stall managed to raise a fund of RM 734.00.

Even though everyone was tired, we were all happy to mingle with Leos from our sister club and just to have fun together. We would like to thank our host club, Lion Club of Kuching Host for giving us the chance to help out in this project to help raise funds and make life meaningful for the children there.

Visiting to Salvation Army In Conjuction With The Mooncake Festival ( 29.09.2012 )

On the 29th of September 2012, Leo Club of SMK Sungai Maong had a joint project with our sponsoring host club, Lions Club of Kuching Host to celebrate the Mooncake Festival with the children at the Salvation Army Children’s Home. At the same time, the Mooncake festival tradition will be carried on in today’s generation. A total of 30 Leos participated in this project. The objective for this project is to bring fun and joy to the children there especially during this festival celebration.

Before the project, the committees worked hard to plan fun activities for the children. On that day, Leos arrived at 4.00pm to prepare the food, entertainment while others played and interact with the children there. The first activity was the lantern designing competition. The children there were really creative and proud of their masterpieces which were then hanged around the playground. There were games, singing and dancing. The children there loved the singing and dancing especially to the famous song, ------- Oppa Gangnam Style. We were all sad that the day has to come to an end. We gave each child a small packet of chocolates as a gift and wished them God Bless as we left the place. The project ended at approximately 9.00pm.

This was truly a memorable project. Leos were very helpful throughout the whole event. The Leos were very tired, but when we saw the smiling faces of the children there, we know that every hard work was worth it. Here, we would like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsoring host club, Lions Club of Kuching Host for helping us in making this project possible. Thank you so much for chipping in to sponsor Mcdonald’s chicken for the children’s dinner. We would also like to thank our Leo advisor, Lion Marie Lim for taking time out to enjoy this festive occasion with the children and not to forget our teacher advisors, Madam Maggie Jong and Miss Maria Liew for their support and guidance throughout the whole project. Thank you. Last but not least, we want to thank all the Leos and Leo’s parents who have contributed directly and indirectly to make this project a success. Without them, this project will never be possible.

“It is always worth it to spend time with the unfortunate”. When doing this project, not only did we put smiles on others faces but we did gain a lot of experiences ourselves. It was amazing to see the children unite as one even though all of them are from different families and different backgrounds. They taught us the power of unity; living together in harmony; looking out for each other’s back and living together as one family. And that is indeed the spirit we all lack today.
